You only have one home heating system, so you need to take good care of it. Otherwise, you’ll be in for some expensive repairs.
To keep your HVAC system in tip-top condition, here are a few maintenance steps you should take.
1. Inspect and replace air filters.
Over time, the air filters become clogged with dust, allergens and other harmful pollutants. Not only do clogged air filters reduce indoor air quality, they also decrease the efficiency of your furnace. Change your air filters once every few months, or once a month if you live in a dusty area or with individuals who suffer from allergies or asthma
2. Check the thermostat.
It’s a good idea to test the thermostat to make sure the HVAC system is able to reach the set temperature. If the furnace doesn’t turn on, then that’s a sign it needs immediate attention.
If the furnace does turn on, make sure the vents are blowing heat and not lukewarm air. If the HVAC system is unable to reach the temperature set on the thermostat, then reach out to Blue Apple Electric for an inspection.
3. Watch and listen for smoke and strange noises.
Your furnace should not be making any banging, thumping, scraping or screeching noises when turned on. Odd sounds can indicate a delayed ignition, ductwork expansion and contraction, loose blower wheel, motor bearing problems or issues with combustion.
If you see smoke or soot deposits near the heating unit, the burners may need adjusting or the furnace may have a cracked heat exchanger. Be sure to call a professional HVAC technician to identify the exact cause and make the necessary repairs.
4. Clean vents.
With air traveling in and out of vents, you can expect them to collect dust and other harmful pollutants. Use a wet rag or a vacuum to clean the vents at least once a month.
5. Inspect and lubricate the blower motor.
If your furnace does not come equipped with a self-oiling system, then you’ll need to buy a non-detergent oil to lubricate the furnace blower motor. At least once a year, apply a few drops to the oil ports to ensure the furnace is running smoothly.
Scheduling a professional inspection at least once a year is another great way to make sure your home’s HVAC system is functioning properly. Give Blue Apple Electric a call to learn more about what an inspection includes.
