Though we’re nearing fall, in Las Vegas the heat doesn’t let up until wintertime. So if you face any of the following problems with your AC, we’ve got a few DIY tips for air conditioning repair.
- Loud or unusual noise
If the AC seems to be operating louder than usual, the first thing you should do is determine whether the noise is coming from the indoor or outdoor unit. Then, look for signs of wear and tear that could be causing the noise. The AC could have a broken piston pin, crankshaft, or connecting rod. Other causes include loose parts, unbalanced internal fan blades, electrical issues, malfunctioning compressor, obstruction, refrigerant leak, and bad bearings. The best thing you could do is tighten loose connections and replace broken parts, if easily accessible. In most cases, you’ll need to schedule professional air conditioning repair.
- No cool air
The outdoor unit may be clogged with debris, like leaves, branches, and dust. Turn off the unit and clean the outdoor unit with water and a washcloth. If that doesn’t take care of the issue, you may have an electrical problem, clogging issue, malfunctioning compressor, or a refrigerant leak that requires professional repair.
- The AC won’t turn on
A power surge may trip the circuit breaker for the AC unit, in which case it needs to be reset. Simply go to the electrical panel and locate the breaker that controls the AC and switch it on. Other causes could be issues with the thermostat, blown fuse, clogged air filter, clogged AC drain line, AC motor failure, and refrigerant leak.
- Water leak from the AC unit
A leaking AC unit could be due to a clogged drain line. Cleaning the line or replacing a damaged tube can help stop the water leak. However, if the tube or drain pan is filled with ice, the cause is related to refrigerant.
Other causes of a water leak include a disconnected drain line, broken condensate pump or float switch, condensation buildup, frozen evaporator coils, clogged air filter, and poor AC installation.
