Every home has a few different types of lighting fixtures. Each lighting fixture requires a specific type of light bulb and wattage to serve its purpose. Here are the six types of light bulbs you may need to buy for your home.
- LED
LED light bulbs are used in a variety of fixtures and typically use less electricity than incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light. An LED light bulb’s brightness is measured in lumens, rather than watts.
These bulbs are slightly more expensive but are well worth the cost with their higher level of energy efficiency. In addition, they are environmentally friendly and have a long lifespan.
- CFL
CFL bulbs contain mercury and have a softer glow, compared to other types of light bulbs. They typically come in a spiral-shaped design and use minimal amounts of electricity. CFL bulbs can be used in a variety of lighting fixtures around the home, including outdoor post lights and indoor lamps.
- Fluorescent
Fluorescent light bulbs require very little energy to produce optimal brightness and last up to 20,000 hours. This type of light bulb is common in laundry rooms, kitchens, and other utility spaces. Colored fluorescent bulbs can be used to create a unique design.
- Halogen
Halogen light bulbs are often used for indoor and outdoor flood light applications. They are affordable, energy efficient, and last for nine to 12 months of regular use. Halogen light bulbs mimic the warm glow of incandescent lighting and, unlike CFL bulbs, don’t need time to warm up.
- Incandescent
Incandescent light bulbs are the most common type of bulbs inside homes. They are budget friendly, use more energy than other bulbs, and are likely to become hot to the touch with use. Incandescent light bulbs have a much shorter lifespan than CFL and LED bulbs.
Incandescent light bulbs can be found in ovens, microwaves and refrigerators.
- Vintage and Decorative
Also known as Edison light bulbs, vintage bulbs add a decorative touch to light fixtures in the home. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and can be used in chandeliers, sconces, and ceiling fans.
