If you’re making DIY plumbing repairs at home, don’t make the mistake of rushing through or being overzealous. There’s a right way to do things and here are a few tips to help you properly tighten plumbing fittings.
Keet It Hand Tight
Plumbing fittings don’t need to be extremely tight to do their job. The truth is, pipes need to be hand tight so that water can flow through the system. Plumbing pipes are made so that they are tightened just enough to prevent water from leaking but not enough to prevent proper water flow. In addition, over-tightening plumbing connections can warp the rubber plumbing fittings inside the pipe and actually increase the risk of leaks.
No Stripping
Plumbing fittings look like super-sized bolts. Each one contains threads that allow the fitting to screw onto the pipe and create a tight seal. Over-tightening the bolts could strip the threads inside the fitting or on the pipe’s exterior. Once the threads have been stripped, you won’t be able to properly tighten the pipe and end up with a leak. You could even end up with a cracked or burst pipe during seasons of extreme temperatures.
Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty
Turn the fitting to the left to loosen it, and to the right to tighten it. This is true for faucets, screws, jars, and bottles. Remember this rhyme if you need to quickly shut off the water supply in an emergency. This rhyme will also help prevent a bad seal or stripping fittings.
Plumber’s Tape
Plumber’s tape is made from silicone and is used to create a strong, waterproof seal on pipes and fittings. Use plumber’s tape around fittings while you tighten them to prevent over-tightening and stripping. You could also reduce the risk of leaks by using plumber’s tape.
Magnetic Insulation
Exterior pipes should be wrapped in magnetic insulation to reduce the risk of pipes freezing, cracking, and bursting during cold weather. Wrap pipes in magnetic insulation to protect them from harsh weather and keep them in good condition year round.
